Different areas have iconic places, places where you just have to say the lake, the river, etc. without giving a name and people know what you mean. Around here the River is the Connecticut River. I went to fish and sample here, hoping for some rock bass, some of my usual spots were overcrowded with fishermen and even swimmers in some spots, so I went to a spot below the dam. Fishing brought no luck, but I had luck sampling.

I seen a school of minnows so I set myself yo catch them. I tried dip netting them but they were far too fast and warry for that. dip, kick, and rush netting all failed. (rush netting is my term for scaring fish into a net by rapidly running your body into a school with a net placed at the likely excape area).

But the fish kept coming back to the same spot. I got out my seine. It took 5 or 6 seining attempts to finally get some and I had a school of 4 good sized fish and a bunch of fry, they were banded killifish.

These were the first bandeds I caught on my own and I noticed they have a peculiar ability to sit upright on your hands while most fish you hold fall sideways.

I went to throw the fry back and the wind blew the seine tossing them on the shore. I had to pick them out by hand to put in the water manually.

I took my killies home and the rest of my banded killies greeted them in the manner typical of the species. (alot of chasing and some nipping). actually the bag i was acclimating them in opened up and one was left in it, I assume the rest left on their own and faced the same greeting. Looking in the tank I only see one small killi hanging near the surface away from the rest, so i hope the rest are doing ok.
