I caught this baby sunfish in an old farm pond in Mercer county New Jersey. It was at one time fed by a small stream that from what I can tell flows into the Millstone river then to the Raritan river drainage. If better pictures are needed let me know. I'm pretty sure it's not a baby bluegill so I'm leaning towards a juvenile Banded or Pumpkinseed.

I agree, appears to be a bluespotted.

If it is a Bluespotted sunfish that would be awesome It would also be be troubling since it is a protected species. I guess I'll have to wait until it gets older. I thought that the Bluespotted sunfish was only found in the Pine Barrens

Thanks all

you may need to read up on your local native fish.

The funny thing is that I've caught Redbreast,Pumpkinseed and Bluegill sunfish for 30+ years now. As far I can recall I've never caught a Bluespotted, Banded or Mud sunfish. I do a lot of ultra light fishing so I catch more then my fair share of sunfish. I think I need to look more closely at some of the sunfish I catch.

Yep that is a bluespotted sunfish. They are probably too small to catch hook and line most of the time. They rarely exceed 3 inches.

Man, that's a cool looking sunfish! I've never seen a Bluespotted before.

I guess I'll have to wait until it hits adulthood but now it's looking more like a Banded Sunfish. It has the bands past it's gills and the same markings on it's head. Time will tell I guess. I'd love it if it was a Bluespotted Sunfish but the Banded is also pretty cool looking.
