I was reading another thread and someone said that the mussel caught was a protected species. I caught 2 mussels Easter weekend in a pond and I'm not sure of the species. The thought that they could be a protected species didn't occur to me. Can someone help me id them please? The water shed is probably the Lower Delaware, there is a creek that runs through Mount Holley NJ and the township dammed it in 2 places to create ponds.

It's definitely a mussel not a clam but after looking at some pictures of the various freshwater mussels I still have no idea. That means that I won't be taking anymore out of those ponds if I come across them.

In most states it's illegal to possess native mussels, even the dead valves, without some form of permit both because they tend to be fragile populations, and because they're of some commercial value. The ones in the pictures aren't Corbicula, but I'm not sure which natives they are.
