Does anyone know anyway to make or get some sort of darter trap. The darters in question which I would like to trap are in a shallow sandy shore of the Thames River here in Ingersoll and are mostly less than an inch long. Any input would be greatly appreciated, thank you!
Though most people dip or kick net darters, I have heard the occasional story of them getting caught in minnow traps.
I have often wondered if a darter specific trap was possible, taking advantage of the darters habit of hiding under rubble. Unlike a minnow trap, i assume the openings would be on the bottom not the middle. Maybe the trap itself would be disguised to look like a rock or such.\
I have no idea how to actually make it, but have thought of traps like this before.

I have not had any luck with traps, but long handled dip nets work well. Those guys are fast though. Any idea what type of darter it is?Does anyone know anyway to make or get some sort of darter trap. Martin, do you really use driftnets to catch darters? We've been running a very similar driftnet in the upper Paint Rock River in 'bama for a year and never caught a darter in it. We never tried to, either, but it's easy to catch darters with a 3-person seine net. Here's what our net looks like in action --

This is a pair of designs from BG Granier. I went out to test the version with wings ONE time with him and we did not catch any darters, but I think that if you include a lip on the bottom edge that angles inward, you can prevent darters from swimming out of the net. Also, you have to go upstream from the trap and roust the darters from their perches by means of stomping, cursing loudly, and thrashing about in an aggressive fashion.
