I found what looks like a chiton attached to my elbow after snorkeling an Ozark spring yesterday (its not a leech and has many legs on its underside). I assumed it was a freshwater chiton, but now know there are no freshwater species of chiton. I assume its something common, that I just haven't noticed before. Any ideas, maybe some kind of amphipod or scud?

If it has legs, it's probably a water penny. If not, if the underside is slug-like, it's a limpet.

No freshwater chitons for sure, Water pennies have always looked like little trilobites to me.

If the spring was fish free could it have been a tadpole shrimp?
