Maybe to a person who has been doing this for decades. But not to a person doing this for a year. Was my original ID for a golden shiner accurate? Those are really the only think with an upwarding mouth. That's mostly how I try to identify. The whole fins thing is not muy strong suit. There are no Lythrurus in Mass. But the pictured fish have an upward pointing mouth, and the origin of the anal fin is posterior to the dorsal origin. That should narrow it down.

From the look of the fish, and knowing where they came from, I'd have to say common shiner. They look nothing like cutlips minnows, and really don't look like any kind of Notropis.
