I am looking to acquire some brook silversides, Labidesthes sicculus for my aquarium. I have kept inland silversides, Menidia beryllina in the past. From my experience with them they are very delicate to handling. Since I do not live where brook silversides are native I would have to reach out to someone who has the ability to collect them and ship them. What are the odds of this species surviving such an experience?

this time of year you would have little chance of a Labidesthes sicculus surviving.
odds of this species surviving just being netted and shipping zero.in the past i have lost over 50% in the early spring before i evan got home
fish would pass in the bucket before we evan left the creek with salted and treated water.

They are extremely delicate. I've only ever been able to get them home alive by netting them right before the river ices over and them taking them straight home. I don't know if they would be shippable at all.

That is my fear... Inland silversides are super delicate, but it seems brook silversides are even more delicate. It appears my quest is just a pipe dream. Thanks for the responses though.

However, the eggs would ship well, but you'd have to find someone with a colony of them first.

I actually netted two of them in NC last fall and they made the 6+ hour trip home just fine in treated water, breather bags, and a styrofoam cooler. They did just fine in captivity for a few months also, until they found out how to get to the floor.

I had a similar experience with Inland silversides that I collected on the Eastern shore of VA. They survived two days in breather bags, kept cool and dark, and lived just fine in my saltwater tank until I moved, when I lost all 3 that I had. Cool fish though, I'd love to get some more.

I am a big inland silversides fan, I managed to ship a couple dozen of them via second day mail in a standard fish box.

Eggs is an interesting idea can't say I ever gave that a thought... Does anyone know if brook silversides have ever been bred in aquaria?
