Caught this guy in my favorite local stream (central Missouri, drains directly to the Missouri River).

About 5" long, part of a school of ~30-40.

After going through the Peterson Freshwater Fishes guide my best guess is Creek Chub?

Take a look at the Peterson guide again and look at Luxilus. Have you already been through your fishes of Missouri guide on this fish?

Jeebus, the minnows are going to be the death of me. If this is anything like birding was for me, just give me a couple years and I'll be good to go on my IDs

Now that you guys have directed me to the proper genus I do see that the above photo was no Creek Chub.

Was this one a Creek Chub? It was about 9 1/2" long.

I don't have the MO Fishes book yet...I've been spending my money on other things (and I'm waiting for my buddy to get his copy in the mail any day now)...but I will eventually get it! Right now all I have is the Peterson guide and American Aquarium Fishes.

I'd guess creek chub and let you know it took me a quite a while to ID and I'm still wrong quite a bit. I recommend getting fishes of Missouri since you live there and you can buy it straight from the source dirt cheap (as far as fish books go). I would also advise getting a little hang on tank they use at pet shops to bag fish (or similar) and bring it stream side. You can put that Peterson guide to use and really cement ID features.

Thanks for the hang-on-tank suggestion! I wish I had realized I should take one to the creek when I started going...I have one for my reef aquariums!

Also, I don't believe Fallfish is found in Missouri?
