Looks to be a Longear sunfish. The redbreast will not have a white margin around the 'earflap'. Dollar sunfish will also have this feature, but from the photo it is a bit hard to tell if there are any markings on the black portion of the earflap. So I will stick with Longear.
certainly not worth 28 dollars

I'm not holding anything against the fish store. I go out of my way to shop there, cuz its an awsome place.
If they seriously do not know what a sunfish looks like then I would attempt to educate them about natives - they sorely need a mentor.

I would tell them what they have, most likely they don't know

CLEARLY don't know. Otherwise they would be blatantly lying about what the fish is. Alternative scenario: They do know what it is, and they know it's illegal, so they are calling it a Cichlid and selling it for a ridiculous price so that they have plausible deniability.

I don't know if it's legal in MA or not, I'm just speculating. I will let the folks who sell on aquabid and the NANFA forum speak for themselves - I would think they have done their homework but one of course cannot assume this...

In most cases it's about being properly permitted.
Oddly, many states require no special permits to sell "tropical" or pet trade fish but you must have the appropriate permits to sell fishes native to the US or even more local geographic range.
