Hi everyone, i have 2 Sunfish here and would like to know if you can help me properly identify them. I caught them in a relatives cattle pond here in East Texas.I have had them in my 55 gallon for aprox 1 month along with a few other natives i am growing out. Will they be ok to stay in my 55 or will i need to move them up to the 200 + gallon. At the moment they are about 4-5 " long. They feed well on feeders, crickets, worms, and have even taken to freeze dried shrimp. Thank you in advance

Look like Orangespotted Sunfish to me.

A 55 gal tank should be fine for two of them.

I second Mike's ID, those are O-spots. They're easy to keep, don't get too big, and aren't as aggressive as other sunfishes. And they're pretty fish, too.

I agree with them. Also 4-5 inches is pretty much as big as they will get.

Thanks a Ton everyone, I am glad to know what they are and also glad they will stay on the smaller side. I really enjoy watching these 2 in the tank, they seem to be pretty interesting fish, fairly active (mostly at night) and they don't hide as much as some of the other fish I have.
Thanks Again for taking the time to help :)

Last pic: That's a sharp looking largemouth. How big is it? Are the gambusia food?

I love orange spotts. I am trying to catch and photo some so I can have caught and photographed the fishes of Wisconsin... (just started this year and suprisingly am getting near half way done!)

I wish you luck with them!

Thanks Dean, i have 2 LM both are about 4" ...He was ,i suppose being nosey while i was getting pics of the perch lol! I will be moving them to a 240 gallon soon. We are hoping to get started on a pond when the weather cools a little and as long as everything goes well with that they will be in the pond. Yes the Gambusia is food, I raise them out in a seperate tank and release them in small groups to feed the bigger fish. I found that when i had too many Gambusia in the tank at one time, they bullied the other fish and even tried to pick the slim coat off of them. I also have about 11 blackstripe top minnows as well, the largest is the same size as the bass. Thanks Again for the comment :)

Thank you , I have done alot of fishing for sunfish and these are the first that i have caught ( that i know of). I caught these at the edge of the pond at night with my dip net, by running it under the moss and greenery.
I think that is really cool that you photograph the fish in your area, i would love to do that. I find it really hard to pull myself away from the water at times, i would stay out for hours just seeing what all I can catch. Though i let most go, on occasion i keep a little something for the tank. Thanks Again, and good luck on your fish hunting.

Yes, gambusia can be mean. I've actually had them kill a juvenile largemouth through nipping. A bit of revenge I guess!
