as a young lad i found this fish all most in every creek, trib, and or stream/river in my area
now as a older man in life i can see it falling to the wayside.
this past weekend i had a very good trip yet i sampled only one from its last of few strong holds left.
what can we do?

I didn't realize how bad off it has become. I have been fishing in an area where they are supposed to be common here in Wisconsin, but have yet to catch a single specimen. I agree that more has to be done, but what is causing the decline over its entire range?

That's a good article, I was unaware of how bad the problem was, I knew the numbers were declining but I didn't think it was very significant, how sad. :(

Tony, Stonelick lake has a decent population of them. I have been stocking them in my pond, and my broodstock has come from there. After seeing this article, I might make a few more trips to catch some more.

i would think modern housing with water run offs causing the creeks to widen
and run faster braking down the natural rivers normal flow
thus wiping out there native habitat.
the area i visited this past weekend had this trouble
and the area has changed in the last 20 years
and the longears are gone or well below numbers in the past
of what they were for sure.
