Here are a couple just insane Minnow trap catches that where procured while trying to catch Mudpuppies for a population survey.
Largemouth bass....

I'll call foul if by the end this picture series there isn't a picture of a Mudpuppy. I am assisting next week in a population survey for them but we are doing the seining and flipping rocks technique.
As for the bass. That is crazy. How big are the entrance holes to the trap? Was it baited or did the fish just wander in?

We bait the traps with cut fish and chicken liver. Usually the case is that these fish get into our traps trying to feed on the gobies or small sunfish that enter the traps in stupid numbers and then get stuck. The entrance holes to the traps are only about a inch and have been modified to try and exclude larger sized fish and other ctitters. As you can see this does not always work well. These things just rip up the traps. Other fun catches have been muskrats and snapping turtles. They just flat out destroy the traps.

Are any of the big critters alive when you find them?
The only casualties we have ever had was a trap full of Crayfish pieces after a Muskrat got into one. As mentioned above the larger stuff usually just destroys our traps, it is only once and a great while that we run into things like humongous bass....

Thanks for the Mudpuppy pic. I was out assisting in a survey the yesterday and we ended up finding 23 Mudpuppies, including the largest ever found in Ohio around 14".
Nice looking puppy..
Our largest to date out here was just a bit under 16 inches. She was one massive puppy!
If I may ask what was the water temp in the area surveyed? and also what depth where you finding them?

We weren't taking water temperature or chemistry. This is a long on-going survey (since 1987 or 1988) to study the effects of lampricide. We were just taking data directly on the animals.
Depths ranged from a couple of inches to about 3' or so. It was hard to survey water much deeper than that as we were seining. The river was also slightly low.

Sure it was baited.... it was baited with mud puppies!
