I obtained a pair of Elegant Madtoms over the weekend. This is my first shot at keeping madtoms. Anybody have any tips/advice on keeping madtoms? Has anyone kept Elegant Madtoms before?

While I cannot comment directly on madtom care (as I've never had any), I think they would be need similar requirements/setups that other madtoms need. However, I would think you would rather have a loose gravel substrate with numerous 'slab' rocks so that they can create a crevasse to hide underneath. They will likely be most active at night, and they prefer moderate current (as opposed to a stagnant tank that tadpole madtoms prefer). Sorry I can't be much help. There is plenty of info on other madtoms in this Section that you can maybe expect similar results from your elegans. Good luck with them.

Agree with Uncle... I am not familiar with the elegans but other stream living madtoms have been very cryptic and preferred to stay hidden most of the time... coming out at most during feeding time... nice big gaps between drift wood and a desire on your part to feed something that you will only see once every few months are all that seem to be required. Put some darters in the tank so that you have something to see and then over feed them somewhat and the madtom will clean up when the lights go out... and if you are lucky will eventually com out to eat when you can see him.
