I set up a tank earlier this month (January). I live in northeast PA. I collected local plants from lakes (weather was warmer early in the month and the lakes hadn't iced over yet) and streams. I assumed that if the plants were still alive during the harsher, colder weather (lake/stream water temps are in 50s-40s) that they should be hardy and do well. I was just wondering if there are plants that actually do better in winter and may not do well in water temps in low 60s (temp of tank at this time) or warmer summer temps. The tank is up for 2 weeks and so far they seem to be OK. I don't know the species, but can post some pics if that helps.

I'm not aware of any temperate aquatic plants (or terrestrial plants, for that matter) that would necessarily experience more growth in the winter. If things seem to be doing OK right now I wouldn't worry about it. But you should definitely post some pics. People will definitely be interested to see what you've collected.

Here are some pics. Sorry about the quality but photography is not my strong point. The plants in #5 were the first I found a few weeks ago. Nativeplanter was nice enough to ID them for me (Callitriche Heterophylla) and give me some info. The rest I do not know. The plants in #1 were found in a slower area of a stream, the rest were all from a small lake that runs into the stream where I found #1. I am familiar with fish species but the plants are new to me and I am having a hard time finding info on type/care. This site has been a great help.

1 is Watercress. Needs quite a bit of light, and is usually found in springs. Thats about all I know about that.
