I've been thinking about getting a 55 gallon tank (its exactly 4 feet long) with some MO Longear or Dollar sunfish, black stripe topminnows and/or rainbow shiners, darters and mudminnows. Ill eventually add a crayfish when my fish mature? Is anything wrong with this setup, any suggested species?

I'd leave out the crayfish. They like to eat fish.

Put your location in your profile... at least the state and general area or drainage... that might affect the species that I would select for your tank... I mean, your ideas sound OK (except I agree with Susan that you should leave out the crayfish)... but I would recommend that you get out in the water if possible and see what is in your local area.

As much as I like crayfish you do have to watch what fish you put in a tank with them. I have 4 adult crays in my 75 gallon and I'm pretty sure they are the main reason why I had to stop putting Black Nosed Dace in the the tank. They simply disappeared. The rest of my fish including bottom dwellers like 3 baby Brown Bullhead catfish are never hassled it's kind of weird. You could go with a dwarf species of crayfish like the Cambarellus Patzcuarensis orange crayfish (CPO) or Cambarellus shufeldtii. Of course if the sunfish get big enough they'll eat the crayfish so you have to take that into consideration.

Well that's why we ask folks to put it in their signature or profile...

If you are going to buy fish, take a look at some of the vendors here on the forum. Dollars are OK, I think for a topminnow I would look at F. chrysotus. Rainbow shiners are of course nice, and rainbow darters are good too. I might also look at a Percina darter, like P. nigrofasciata (for variety and since they are interesting from a behaviour standpoint. I have no experience with mudminnow, but I think they can get kind of large... I might leave that one out as well and go with a larger school of shiners... or even a mixed school.

Brian Zimmerman is great, you will get great fish, and plenty of support. I am not that familiar with BT Darters, but Brian T. seems to take his sales very seriously, and I would expect nothing but the best sales, and service. Paul Sachs, aquaculture store, is very good, your fish should arrive live, and healthy. I have ordered a fish or two from Sachs, and know Brian Z. well enough to give a full thumbs up to both. Personally, I like Zimmermans, because Brian breeds most of his fish himself. Not many are wild caught.
