Hey, I caught a tadpole madtom recently and am debating whether I should keep it. Some websites say they grow to 3 inches, some say 5 inches, what is it? If it tops at 3 inches I'll be happy to put it in my 48 gallon with my chrysotus, confluentus, snails and skirt tetras, if not then I would not want a 5 inch cat eating my fish.

I have about a 4" brindled madtom and he's so slow and uncoordinated i'd think he'd have a hell of a time eating any decently intelligent fish

When I have kept tadpole madtoms in 55 gallon tanks, they most certainly ranged from 4 - 5" but were easy to keep well fed and apparently not interested in eating smaller tank mates. Your mileage may vary.

Agreed atleast with the brindled version. He's never even looked interested in tiny feeder minnows or darters...even if he was from what i've seen he can't catch them.

Madtoms are good guys for the most part (never had a tadpole or margined or ozark eat anybody)... your darters are safe.

Michael, I agree with the "for the most part" but I once kept Noturus funebris with minnows in a 55 gallon and it most certainly thinned them out at night when I didn't keep up with proper feeds.

Found my 2 inch madtom being eaten at the tail by an apple snail. I am wondering if he got stuck in the shell and closed in or he died other ways...

A healthy fish won't let a snail chew on it, but if it dies, snails will feed on the corpse.
