*blushes* I'm just your run of the mill, normal overworked engineering major.

I did the jar test as directed by Dr. Gary Miller. Sure enough the more I agitated the jar the higher the PH rose. It's now at 8.1 from 7.5 originally and Dr. Miller thinks it will rise to 8.7. If that is the case it will mean not only the C02 dissipating reduces PH, as many of you said, but the bacteria is indeed reducing the PH somewhat in the fish tank as it is only 8.1 in tank vs. a possible final 8.7 in the jar test.

I learned something!

Best part I see is that multiple parties systematically thought problem through and provided sound logic.

So true. I can count on good input on this site.

I meant to say agitation increased PH instead of reduced! Of course you knew that but I wanted to correct that.

Aeration with air strippers is a common cheap, chemical free way for public water companies to raise pH for corrosion control. Often seen when the source water also has lots of organics adding color and particularly odor [swamp smell] which can be effectively aerated out. Standing down wind of one you get a concentrated idea of what the water would smell like in a glass.

Seems like a dying technology though. I think too many engineers are too close to too many equipment and chemical salesmen. Amazing when you know the price of a drum of KOH.

Yes.

Stuff does not bother neighbors as much as aggressive aeration. We can be wussies when it comes to smells.

Thank you for supporting our organization Cecil!

On another note, Cecil is one heck of a good fish taxidermist, for those of you anglers out there.

Thank you all for accepting me even when I was just a guest!

Wish me luck. Tomorrow's the big day. I'm going to seine my biggest pond with a a seine 200 feet long. Never used a seine that big before! Got lucky and picked it up used for $50.00! Hoping to seine up 100 13 to 14 inch yellow perch for delivery to Bass Pro Shops in Springfield, Missouri on Friday. I'm not looking forward to the 10 plus hour drive but at least I'll get paid for the fish and the delivery.

I can post pics here if anyone is interested.

After seining in the lake effect rain and ice pellets with air temps hovering around 40 F. a friend and I got the job done. The next morning it was off to Bass Pro Shops in Springfield, MO with 109 yellow perch from 11 to 13 1/2 inches. The largest ones eluded us for the most part. Sure would have been nice to share the driving on that 11 hour trip but sometimes you have to do what you have to do.

VHS testing results and permit for importation into Missouri came in just two days before I had the trip planned.

I come home to Indiana to a bill of over $620.00 for VHS testing of the perch and bluegills.

You just have to wonder with the ballast water that's bringing in all the exotics including pathogens with nothing done about it, and anglers moving fish around, why they have to target fish farms when there has never ever been a positive on a fish farm. I guess we are the low hanging fruit and APHIS has to look like they are doing something. Never mind there is also no provision for fish going into a closed system.

Fortunately I have a couple of feed trained species BPS has a hard time acquiring in large sizes (the other is smallmouth bass), but if someone steps up outside of the Great Lakes and doesn't have to test for VHS I'm at a disadvantage. If I had the money I'd love to sue APHIS. Their science wouldn't hold up in court. It's a sham. Please feel free to debate this with me if you disagree. I have no problem with that.

O.K. enough of the soap box speech...

The 200 foot seine ready to go:

Seine in the water being pulled in:

A pull of about 100 yellow perch, 20 to 30 smallmouth bass, and 30 to 40 bluegills.

One of the largest yellow perch:

One of the largest bluegills. 10 1/4 inches 1 lb. 4 1/2 oz. on my certified scale.

I'm looking for the valve where you inflated that bluegill. Hidden on the back side? |;>)

Nope that's what selective breeding and feeding will do. That and it's mostly an all male pond.
