I was in a LFS getting some brine shrimp for my fish and saw a small bag of algae wafers and it said for catfish. I realize they were packaged for tropical catfish but I thought I would grab a bag since they were on sale. I usually break the wafer up and put them in the tank at night, they are gone by morning. Are my elegant and mountain madtoms eating these? From what I've read, these cats are mostly 'meat' eaters, but will they eat these?

Those things usually have a lot of fish meal, etc. in them, often as the primary ingredient. They probably smell meaty enough to attract the madtoms.

We all need our "veggies". I've caught channel cats that had a belly full of hair algae out of some quarries already so it wouldnt suprise me that another native catfish would go green when the oppurtinity arises.

Well, somebody is eating those algae wafers. I hope it's the madtoms. My Elegant Madtoms come out during feedings, and I've seen one of my Mountain madtoms from time to time. I must say, those little fish are amazing hiders.

Another question to piggyback on this thread...I have a brindled madtom probably 4" long give or take 1/2". Would it eat a small crayfish? One day after not feeding him for a while I noticed his gut was loaded, and then a couple days ago I noticed a small crayfish pincher laying on the substrate. Far as I know it was the only crayfish I had left in the tank. Would he have eaten it? Maybe it molted and he decided he could eat it then? Do fish realize when a craw is soft?

Yes, I think it's likely.
