What kind of saw do you use to section them? I've never worked with them before and kind of confused. I use an older American-Optical one-ten medical microscope, it has 4,10,40, and 100 power lenses(of course multiplied by 10 because of the eye pieces). Is this enough? And, do you need a dissection microscope?

PS:I'll be viewing flathead catfish otolishs, so they'll be fairly large.

My graduate research was with sunfish otoliths, pretty small, and we would sand them down to the mid-plane. We were reading daily growth rings on YOY, and for that X400 was necessary. For reading annual check rings on larger otoliths I wouldn't be surprised if a good dissecting 'scope would work at X40 or X50.

For gars we grind them with a dremel and use a 50x or 100x for the larger fish. One tool I find really useful though is one of those cheap clip on LED lights, Both for grinding and for viewing under the scope.
