I have been trying to develop an updated 'Freshwater Fishes of Georgia' list using Steven Ellis' old checklist and the Fishes of Georgia Website. But I was also trying to include some informaiton about the original descriptions (name, date, and type locality). While the first two are easy (included in almost every reference), I had to hunt some to try to get the type localities. Fishes of Alabama (Boschung & Mayden), Freshwater Fishes of Alabama (Smith-Vaniz), Freshwater Fishes of Virgina (Jenkins & Burkhead) and Inland Fishes of Mississippi (Ross) all give some type locality data. Putting these all together I have been able to get localities for most fish, but there are still quite a few that I am missing. Is there some place that I can get this information (I tried to use Chris' checklist, but it does not have type localities)? Or do I have to investigate each individual fish? Even then, I know there are some 'discussions' about some of this stuff, so I guess I am also looking for an authoritative, or well recognized source.

Yeah, that's a pain. This is where Lee et al is a good start, but it won't get you the recent work.

Sometimes you get lucky on Natureserve Explorer and Fishbase.

Chris' list is good place to find how recently described the species are: http://www.nanfa.org/checklist.shtml

If it came down to a couple species, I'm sure Chris would be glad to help you out with the final bits of info.

All of that information is in Chris' checklist too from memory, along with other tidbits of information. That was all published in AC.

Other than that though Catalog of Fishes is the only way to go.

Cheers

Agreed, this Catalog of Fishes resource looks like it will give me what I am looking for... thanks Dave.

Peter, while there are lots of good tidbits in Chris' checklist, type locality is not really one of them, at least not that I could find. I have all five volumes of that pulled out separate from my other back issue copies of AC. I use it often, and it was one of the first places I turned to, and it did help a lot for author and date.
