PUBLIC ADMINISTRATIVE INTERN (STREAM MONITORING)
$37,457/YEAR

This position is with the Montgomery County, Maryland, Department of Environmental Protection (DEP). The successful candidate will join with stream monitoring crews to collect and analyze biological, physiochemical, hydrologic, geomorphic, and habitat data needed to assess stream health. Considerable time will be spent outside collecting stream and water quality data under a variety of environmental conditions countywide and year round. Field duties include: fish monitoring, benthic macroinvertebrate sampling, amphibian and reptile surveying, conducting rapid habitat assessments, physical chemistry sampling, geomorphic surveying, stream temperature monitoring, and maintaining several rain and stream flow gages. Lab duties include: subsampling benthic macroinvertebrate samples. Office duties include: data entry, data analysis, preparation of reports, and various public outreach projects. The ideal candidate must be team oriented, work well under pressure, and be able to meet deadlines.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: A 4 Year College Degree.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

1. Proven experience and knowledge of stream ecology, including the collection and identification of aquatic benthic macroinvertebrates, the collection and identification of nongame and game stream fish of piedmont Maryland, and the qualitative and quantitative assessment of stream habitat conditions.

2. Proven experience and knowledge using different water quality sampling techniques including use of multiparameter probes, grab samples and the use of automated water quality sampling equipment.

3. Proven experience and knowledge of conducting and completing geomorphic stream surveys that include, at a minimum, cross sections, longitudinal surveys, pebble counts, and sinuosity.

4. Proven experience and knowledge of maintaining ecological data in a relational database, performing analysis on data through the use of database queries and statistical software packages, and displaying the analysis through a GIS system such as ArcMap.
