So I was browsing my local fish market and they had live Atlantic cod.....so naturally the wheels in my head started turning.

Is it possible to keep one in the home aquarium?

Hmmm, they do grow quite large. And since they are a north atlantic species who (if what I heard is right) move to deeper water in summer that may imply a chiller is needed. Other than that I assume they'd be theoretically possible to keep. I don't remember seeing cod family fish in any of the larger aquariums though and Boston has alot of local saltwater. Maybe they do have one and i am just not remembering it though.

There's a smaller version called a tom cod, seperate species, get's only to a foot long. Very much a cold water fish, chiller required.

New England aquarium had or has a cool deep water atlantic display with some big cod and other neat stuff.

With a good chiller & a large enough tank, anythings possible.

And with a good chiller you need a steady electric supply and the wherewithal to pay for it.

That's a 70 pound fish. Hmm. I don't want to discourage you, I want to give you ways you could make this possible. So I'm going to give you the hyperlink for a design plan for a Do-It-Yourself plywood tank. Quote Jon Olav (from the following link): "I paid less for my 2200 litres (581G) tank than I would have to pay for a 900 (238G) litres tank in the shop." http://www.jonolavsa...2200litres.html

And here's zavlar, the least expensive waterproof coating I've seen yet:

with other links like

You can do it.

If the chiller alone doesn't discourage, the tom cod, or tommy cod puts the fish size into doable range.

I'm curious about where the live cod were seen for sale and whether it really was a cod at all. Cod are harvested well offshore at this time of year by draggers who freeze the catch on board. Also there is a length limit for harvest.
Seems very impractical to transport large cod live and the price would be astronomical.
I'm betting it wasn't really a cod.

Don't worry, I don't really plan on getting a cod...I was just wondering if it's been done.

I saw the live cod in an Asian fish market. They all had tags in their lower lip saying they were farmed Atlantic cod. They were small, around 1.5 feet long. When I got home I looked up the species, and it's a match. It's quite an interesting looking fish.
