Though I got the three at about the same size and time the darker bullhead (who hides alot and is rarely seen) grew larger and is much darker in color. I heard black bullhead grow larger than brown and though not recorded in this state so unlikely I was wondering if you have useful tips to tell a black bullhead from a brown.
The fish in question is most likely a brown bullhead, but I want to be sure.

The black bullhead has a light cresent right in front of the tail.
No serrations on its pectoral spines.
The anal fin has 17-19 rays.
The brown bullhead has 20-24 anal fin rays.
Rear eddge of the pectoral spines have many sharp serrations.

I have 4 bullhead in my 55 gallon tank. 1 yellow bullhead (black in color), 2 brown bullheads (greyish in color, dark on the back fading to pale on the sides), and one large brown bullhead who is black in color.
