Goes under other publications but for fish specific to the Conasauga River System and tributaries this is an excellent and free resource. It provides decent species accounts, identification keys, pictures, and location data.

I have the spiral bound version of this and it is an excellent resource for the Conasauga and its fish inhabitants. I did a quick search and it appears it is no longer readily available but I am sure a more thorough search would turn up a few. I like having it in paper format so I can take it around with me.

I plan on a web conversion based on this PDF that adds a lot of information, especially environmental parameters like temp, PH, etc. I am also working on a Google maps implementation that does not require but can use Google maps javascript API. It basically allows you to take a static USGS map, or any map to any valid scale, click anywhere on the static map and get an equivalent location on Google maps with a map marker on the clicked point. All that any static map needs is a latitude for the top and bottom of the map and a longitude for the left and right. From that any static map location can be retrieved down to the pixel level. Due to scale incongruences it is not always perfect but good enough. It makes looking up those marked species sample locations on Google maps as easy as clicking the pic. I know not much is visible on my site yet but stuff is going on behind the scenes.

For the field I would prefer printed index cards. That way for any given sampling area I could just bring the relevant index cards and sort them by the criteria that best suited my personal identification needs. Preferably laminated with pics, family, and name printed on one side and the keys with basic ecology outlined on the other. These could be produced and sold individually or in batches, and fit into a standard index card holder. Maybe even offer a holder with the NANFA logo. Perhaps even a subscription for the card/set of the month, making it cheaper for some to afford. Perhaps another thread for that one.
