ECOLOGIST II

Stormwater Management,
Department of Public Works & Environmental Services

Job #11-0881

$51,065 to $68,087 (Grade S24)





Description:

Applies biological and ecological sciences to water resources and stormwater management programs. Overall duties include the support of water quality monitoring, watershed plan implementation, and scoping of improvement projects as part of the County's Stormwater Program in compliance with pertinent Federal, State and County regulations and procedures. Performs highly technical data collection, analysis, and reporting, and participates in water quality sampling and development of monitoring plans. Performs field work including but not limited to biologic assessment and monitoring of stream conditions. Assists in and/or manages consultant contracts, responds to public inquires, performs public outreach and educational activities and adheres to safety procedures. After hour emergency response is a requirement for this position. This position is located within the Watershed Planning and Assessment Branch.



Minimum
Qualifications:


Any combination of education, experience, and training equivalent to graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's degree in aquatic ecology, biology, environmental science, limnology, natural resource management or related field; plus two years of experience in water quality monitoring, data analysis and reporting, bioassessments (fish and macroinvertebrates) using standard protocols, and assessments of stream habitat conditions.



Special
Requirements:


The appointee must possess a valid driver's license, complete a criminal background check to the satisfaction of the hiring agency, and be available as needed on a 24-hour basis for emergencies. Ability to conduct field surveys that require walking long distances and carrying equipment through rough terrain including stream valleys and wetlands.



Preferred
Qualifications:


Knowledge of the methods, principles, techniques and practices used in a sophisticated environmental services program; knowledge and experience with stormwater management systems; experience in physical, chemical, biological and bacteria monitoring including wading in streams; knowledge or experience in stream restoration techniques, stream morphology and hydrology; knowledge of the pertinent Federal, State and County environmental regulations and stormwater discharge permit; knowledge of safety procedures for handling and testing substances; experienced with databases, statistical analysis programs and use of GIS; experience with consultant contract administration; and ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing, including technical reports and public presentations.
