I was at the local bait store today buying minnows to go crappie fishing. I bought a scoop of crappie minnows then saw they had a sign that said Rainbow Minnows. I asked the guy to scoop me some so I can see what they look like. When he showed me, they had yellow and red on them. I then told him I'll come back after fishing to grab a scoop. After 2 hrs of no crappies, I came back and grabbed a scoop for $7.

They are currently in my 20L tank in quarantine for my 55 later. I noticed that the rainbow minnows average 3-4inches and are thick. They look like rosyside dace, but they dont have the black patches. Some have more red than others.

Also, I think they gave me a dogfish too thats 4-5inches.

I live in MN and got these rainbow minnows from Blue Ribbon bait store.

I'll post a video or pic soon. Just took a pic of the potential dogfish and one rainbow minnow, but it came out horrible so I wont be posting for now.

Anyone know what it could be for now? I assume they are native to MN, hence they were at a baitstore. I was hoping they would be rainbow shiners or some type of dace.

thanks.

The "rainbow minnows" sound kind of like Redbelly Dace. Also, do you have enough room for a "dogfish"? You need a pretty big pond just for 1. I'm going to be getting one only if I can make his area at least 10 x 10.

How big is the mouth on these? If very large like on the rosyside dace, I'd guess they're redside dace. If mouth is rather small, probably redbelly dace.
Also is the red on the side or the belly.

What are we calling a dogfish? I always heard that common name refer to a small shark.

Well that certainly makes more sense than a saltwater fish in a pond.

Yeahson421- i don't want the dogfish. It was in the scoop when they gave it to me. I may just kill it unless someone in local wants it.

I assume it's a dace but not sure what kind. I'll post some pics and video soon.

Thanks

Fishman81- sorry. I don't ship. Plus not sure if it's a dogfish. Looks like one. The pics I found online do not look like the one I have.

Also I think the minnows that I got are redside dace. I was hoping for them to be actual rainbow minnows but Dave are fine for now too. Thanks all.

If it does not look exactly like a dogfish, it could be a Central Mudminnow, they look like dogfish but without the long dorsal bowfin that Bowfin (dogfish) are named for.

If it turns out to be a dogfish don't kill it, there are a lot of people that would want one.

Dog fish are needed to chase all the catfish. :)

Honestly I wanted to make a post here once on regional names for fish but I wasn't sure if it would be "serious enough" a post for the page so I never did it.

Dogfish is horrible slang. You may have a bowfin, mudminnow, or any number of fish that the locals call dog fish. Post a photo. Otherwise all you have is a dang ole dogfish.

Its a Central Mudminnow, and is a very good fish for the aquarium.

Central mudminnow. Good fish, and IMO worth keeping.
