So im fairly new to aquariums but i purchased a fluval flora and am looking to stock and have been considering native fish.
since i live in washington collection is out of the option but i was wondering if there are any natives that would thrive in a 7.9gal planted tank.
thanks for any info

I'd suggest looking into Elassoma Gilberti (Gulf Coast Pygmy Sunfish). There is a member here that keeps these and breeds them. Check out this long and informative thread regarding them: http://forum.nanfa.o...assoma gilberti

I'd imagine this is something you could keep a couple of in a tank that small. There are a few other natives I'd imagine also, as people will surely suggest.

Least killifish (which aren't killifish, but livebearers) are nice tiny natives that are easy to keep. They would do well in your tank. A sponge filter for filtration would be all you'd need.

7.9 gallons is plenty of space for...
... a pair of fundulus chysotus, or fundulus cingulatus.
... a single Enneacanthus obesus
... a group of Leptolucania ommata
... a group of Elassoma (any of the species available)
... a pair of Jordanella floridae
... a couple of Etheostoma fusiforme (these could even be mixed with some of the above)

so you have lots of options... you just have to stick with fish that live in the slack water... since you cant really create a lot of current in such a small tank... thinking of that, you could even try pirate perch.

All of the above are good answers. Some of my picks:

Any pygmy sunfishes (Enneacanthus spp.)
Lucania parva
Leptolucania ommata
Lucania goodei
Heterandria formosa

All of the above would be suitable for 1 gallon up to maybe 10 gallons, in an Amano-style tank.

P.S. some grass shrimp would be nice too!

I have a tank with Leptolucania ommata, elassoma Zonatum. They live nicely together and are pretty cool.
