Just a general question to those out there.

I currently have 125 gallon native tank with some Yellow Perch, Bluegills and some Pumpkinseeds.
I am upgrading from a 125 gallon setup to a 150 gallon tank.
I currently have one of those basic metal stands for the 125 gallon tank, the 150 tank is the same dimensions as the 125.
Do you think that the stand has the strength to hold the 150. I'm probably going to weld some extra support in there to be safe.

Has anyone else made the switch from a 125 gal tank to a 150?

I've tried a few searches and I can not find an answer to this one.

Thanks in advance,
Dwayne

Never tried but I'd presume so, it's not like it'll instantly fall apart when you go one pound over the listed limit.

water weighs about 8.5 pounds per gallon...

125 gallons = 1063 pounds
150 gallons = 1275 pounds

so you are asking it to hold an extra 200 pounds... or an extra 20% more...

If aquarium stands weren't meant to hold more than what they weigh, they'd be getting sued left and right. I don't use a stand on some of my tanks, just put them on a sturdy table. These take much more weight than you think.

I'm guessing those stands are built with the assumption that a 125 or 150 will be on them. Just watch it carefully when filling.

I would take a photo of the current stand and then go ask the staff at a LFS. Explain that you want to upgrade to a 150 and ask them what they would sell to someone buying a 150, and if yours would work. You may already have the tank so you wouldn't be buying it from them, but you do represent future business from someone who is serious about fish.

Let me give you the long answer.

Ittttt'llllll hold.

Or, have Braveheart playing while you fill it--in particular the scene where William is telling his men to, "Hollld...Hoollllld....HOOOOLLLLLLDDDD......"

While it may well hold keep in mind it's not just water weight difference the tank itself is much heavier. My son and i can lift a 125 easily but it took 4 of us to lift my 150. Probaby another 200+ lbs besides the water difference.

Where does the extra weight come from? I'm assuming thicker glass?

Yea and just more glass all together.

An empty 150 gallon weighs 350 lbs.

plus you will add more gravel and so on so its final weight maybe more like 40% more.

Wow, how much is a 125? I used to have a 125 and as was said before, it's easily carried by two people.
