As I said when we caught that thing... that is a very colorful longear for ohio, it was in extreme southern ohio so that may have something to do with it but it still really impressed me for an ohio longear.

I think I will always be awed by the beauty of this fish. I just wonder if he is a once-in-a-lifetime find, or are there more like him out there? I am dying to go back to that stream some day and find out!

Glad it's fixed. I'll have to keep the salt issue in mind.

After following Todd's advice for just a couple of days, the problem is completely gone!

Well, you did a water change too, so I'm not completely convinced ;)

One way to test this is to feed him the other food again and see if the problem reoccurrs. As attached as you seem to be to this critter, I doubt that's what you want to do... But think of the scientific value! :) I really don't think it will harm his long term survival, like I said, this seems more like a rash than a problem.

Brian, has anything changed over there?

And yes, that is a BEAUTIFUL specimen :)

I moved the 3 small warmouth out of the main tank and put them in an empty 10 gallon and have been feeding them just the freezedried mysis but I'm not sure there has been that much of a change yet, They look a little better, I think but not completely gone yet. I may go get some trout/panfish worms from walmart here today and see if feeding those for a few days makes a more dramatic difference.

Yeah, Ken, thanks for explaining what a macro function is and how to find it!

Well, you did a water change too...

Well, actually, I didn't do that yet. After reading your explanation, I decided it probably wasn't water quality related. As I said, I had run out of my Avid Aquatics food supply, and bought some freeze dried plankton at the LFS as an emergency measure until my Avid Aquatics order came in. The plankton looks like the Avid Aquatics krill pacifica, but is stinky. Even after the Avid Aquatics food came in, I figured to use up the plankton first. After reading your explanation, I dropped the plankton and fed exclusively freeze dried freshwater shrimp, and in two days the problem was gone. I will use up the plankton on fish that it does not seem to effect. The darters and minnows love it, as do my cichlids. The sunfish will get the freshwater shrimp, as well as live feeders.

I intended to change water on the possibility that a water quality issue might be the problem. Considering that it has gotten down to -5 degrees or lower here the last several nights, I was reluctant to open my window to siphon water out if I didn't have to. And to siphon 55 gallons of water into buckets to carry down the hall one at a time and dump in the bathtub... Thankfully, Todd, you made that unnecessary. I will do a water change when this cold snap is over. I will still have to fill the buckets up in the bathtub and carry them down the hall to the tank to refill it... but I'd rather that be a one way trip.

Actually, I had other, smaller, tanks to drain, clean, and move. This one's next.

So anyway, Todd, I'm quite convinced you had the answer. Thanks again. Problem solved.
