So I took everyones advice and tried to see if I could find anything in a local creek. Sadly, it didn't yield any darters(but I think I might have seen one), but I did catch a minnow but can't identify it. It looks like a mosquito fish from the top but has a black line going down it's side. If anyone has a clue as to what it may be, it would be helpful.

Thanks

Maybe check out Fundulus notti or Fundulus olivaceus, the blackstripe topminnow and blackspotted topminnow, respectively.

Yeah, notatus is more likely than olivaceus in slow-moving water. Sunfish should be very common in such a system.

Congrats on your successful trip. Keep collecting and you will get better at it and catch more fish. Don't get discouraged if you don't catch a lot. Sometimes I will go out 2,3,4 times and not catch anything I'm looking for, and sometimes I catch a ton of stuff. Did you keep the fish?

Yes. I think that she only eats bugs. I tried flakes, but no go. I'm fixin' up a 55 and hoping to catch some darters.

If it is F. notatus she will learn to eat flake soon enough... topminnows normally do pretty well at that... they are used to eating anything floating on the surface... try a high quality flake... I got some made out of 100% earthworm... all the fish love it...

I agree with this 100%, my darters have also been on the earthworm flake food diet. They still love live foods, but are all fat on flake food as well.

Hmm earthworm flakes. Who makes them and where can I get some?

I hope someone answers... I just went to look at mine and found that I do not have the original (one pound) container... I have put it all in smaller containers... so now I need to buy some more too...

I think I may have bought it from Ken's but I am not sure... here is his link...

I recently bought earthworm flake from Angels Plus. My fish like it a lot. I thought it was a good price for the amount. I also got some of their dried earthworms. If you got the earthworms, you would probably have to chop them as they are not dried crisp - they're sort of leathery.
