cutlips minnow. most likely, though in western Pa, you also have tonguetied minnows. Probably need to check range maps. Might be protected.

Both remained unharmed, merely transported less than a mile for HD photographs, than re-released.Also, you apparently took it home without proper ID. You might get a good bit of flack about that. Again it may be a protected species in your state.
Any way to discern a difference?
Also cutlips is the only one listed on the Pa species list, so that may be the way right there.

Here are the distribution maps for both according to a local college

It honestly never occurred to me to actually FISH for these fish! I just spent a couple of hours this weekend chasing fish with my dipnet. I ended up with a better tank than I started with, but I bet I could have kept the girlfriend occupied with this while I raced around the stream.

I had a friend who is into fly fishing and when he told me of the tiny hooks used to immitate gnats, midges, and even no see em's I had thoughts on it but never tried it. I'd like to see someone get a darter on a hook and line.
Using normal hooks I have caught fallfish, golden shiners, and common shiners and have heard of people catching creek chubs.
