A small grassy brook near the conencticut river had my attention for a while so I decided to try sampling it. It is most likely Lascambe Brook (but could be ash swamp brook which is close to it on the map, but ash swamp has a road next to it and i do not remember one here).

Since I was next to it I tried the connecticut river later.

This trip is a bit different from my usual ones as I mainly used a seine. I finally got my 4 foot seine ready. Mind you i kick seined when sampling with others and have used a 6 foot seine before when specifically targeting schools, but this is my first use of a seine as a primary sampling tool.

Here is Lascambe Brook, see the beaver in the water by the shore? you can barely make him out.

As you can see I was just downstream from his dam.

I may be wrong with these ID's, the smaller a shiner is the harder it is for me to ID and all the fish I got were fry sized.

Among the first fish I seined was a brownish tinged minnow who I assume is a white sucker.

This striped pointy nosed guy is puzzling, I suspect blacknose dace.

As I suspected from the slow muddy creek environment, I got a few darters.

Here are pictures of a few seines of minnows and darters. With their stripes and snubbed noses alot of these minnows look like creek chubs.

My next stop was the connecticut river.

I got some minnows their, not sure what kind. But the only minnow I ever seen in the main river before was golden shiner, mostly due to angling as i sampled only once before.

Then I got a bluegill.

Finally I got either a pike or pickerel (I can see neither spots or chain-sides on it). I found it insteresting how it's back had brownish patches when in the water as most I have seen are just green.

I always liked the shape of the face of small pickerel. I wish they kept that as they got older.

Looks like you did well. Thanks for the pics. I agree with your id's. Looks like a pickerel to me.
