Awesome Fry Food!

I recently got this fry food by Hikari Tropical called "First Bites" and it's amazing! My Heterandria formosa fry are even able to eat it! And they also didn't hesitate, as soon as it was in the tank they began chowing down like no tomorrow. I definately reccomend it!

I find it less expensive to buy a mortar and pestle (picked one up for $4 at World Market) and crush up the flake food I feed to my adult fish.

Here's the Hikari First Bites® ingredients and composition, so that you can compare it to other commercial fish flakes:

Typical Analysis
• Crude Protein 48% Min.
• Crude Fat 3% Min.
• Crude Fiber 2% Max.
• Moisture 10% Max.
• Crude Ash 18% Max.
• Phosphorus 1.3% Min.

Ingredients: fish meal, milt meal, wheat flour, Antartic krill meal, clam meal, spirulina, seaweed meal, DL-methionine, monosodium glutamate, garlic, enzyme, vitamins and minerals including stabilized vitamin C

Any fish flake that is of similar quality ingredients would do the same thing crushed as Hikari First Bites® does, and may cost a lot less per unit.

Also, I feel like this is important to mention here, it is very important to keep your fish flakes sealed air tight. Left exposed to air they lose a large percentage of their nutritional value. Just compare the smell of freshly opened fish food with the stuff at the bottom of your can the next time you buy new food, and you'll see what I mean.

Thanks for the info. I actually do crush up my adult flake food, I just had a hard time getting it small enough for H. formose newborns.

Cool! Ill have to try them out later; I will be ordering some least killifish later this week for my 10g. and I hope they will have many young mouths for me to feed.

I have a large colony of formosa and i usually throw microworms in there if I happen to see fry. I've used first bites and it is a great food in a pinch, but you have to be careful with powder foods because they can muck up the water easily.

I tried it and I'm not a big fan, I especially don't see the need for the MSG. I didn't see very fast growth on it. When I use NLS fry starter, and then their grow formula, I see much better results. Especially when I add my DIY egg food. But the best results are had when you use a mixture of as many foods as possible, combined with live and/or meaty.

The adult food may not be appropriate if it doesn't have enough protein and calcium. Fry food usually has higher levels than adult food. Even conditioning food may not be enough because while it does have the extra protein, it may not have the extra calcium. But if you use adult food in combination with other foods, then there's no problem.
