Two things channel cat related caught my eye last week. First was Hawkeye the NH hunting and fishing paper had a record channel catfish on the cover, a new record from NH and likely the first caught here.
They have been moving north from the connecticut border for a decade or two and last I knew they were up to the Deerfield river a few towns south of the border. Also I have seen fish labeled as channel cats in pet stores off and on since the 90's. I wonder if this was one who moved up north from mass or was a pet release. Sadly I couldn't find any other articles to support this catch online.
The other thing was the walmart in hinsdale selling what they call "blue channel cats" (which were not blue). Are these the same as the North American native fish or is their a tropical that shares that name?

Well, I am no expert on the American blight that is the company you mentioned, as I have not been in one in roughly 6 years since I went 'cold turkey' in protest... but...The other thing was the walmart in hinsdale selling what they call "blue channel cats" (which were not blue). I have see baby channel cats sold as blue channel cats in pet store... so likely they are just regular channel cats...

The regular wild-type channel cats are called "blue" in the aquarium trade to distinguish them from albino channel cats which are also popular.
