One of these days, I'd like to make a pond. I have an 800 gallon liner but if able, I'll go with something bigger.

I was thinking of keeping a longnose gar. The calm water would be perfect. If I go with 800 gallons or larger, could I keep a few large mouth bass also or would the gar eat them? Or would the bass bully the gar, or vise versa?

I know they both prefer calm water and shade and that's perfect because my pond would be in mostly shade.

I'm pretty sure I wouldn't have trouble getting the bass to eat but would a gar accept fish chunks, frozen mice/rats and carnivore bites? I know it's best to feed whole body fish but smelt are the only pre-killed whole body fish that I can find (of an acceptable size until the gar and bass get big enough), and while I will provide them, I can't rely on them all the time due to the thiaminase content. I can try introducing mosquito fish to breed on their own but other than that, I don't want to feed live if it's not necessary. (Yes, I know mosquito fish would be more of a snack than anything else.)

And should I start with baby gar and bass to get them used to non-live food and to have them grow up together (if that'll even work)? And do I really need to start the gar in an aquarium? Would it really ram into the side of a pond and hurt it's beak? If so, I imagine it'd have to be kept in a pretty small aquarium compared to it's size so it can't build up enough momentum to do that against a glass wall. Is that right?
