Are you using any specific protocol in this experiment?

Wow, I just googled "Xiphophorus hybrid fitness," and didn't realize how often they use them in cancer research. Interesting. Due to the loads of papers on the subject, I'm not going to post any. It was an eye-opening search.

What do you intend to do with the offspring? If you distribute these offspring to other aquarists, their lineage information is likely to be lost. I believe this has been an issue with some commercial aquarium species, where the fish have been sold for years as a particular species even though they actually have hybrid ancestry. Of course, if the fish will not leave your hands, this is not a problem.

My understanding is that o-spots have very small fry compared to other sunfish, and therefore are difficult to rear in an aquarium. It would be interesting to see what size the hybrid fry are.

Are you planning male longear X female orange spot or female longear X male orange spot?

Not really. Once I get my multi layer breeding pond going I'm just going to put them in and hope for the best.

I plan to, for the most part, keep them to myself. However, if enough people are interested I will get an aquaculture license and sell exclusively to trusted NANFAns.

I won't be breeding in an aquarium, but rather in a garden pond. I'll be sure to give an update should I get any responses. Of course it will likely be a few years before I have any results, but I'm very interested in trying.

Are you planning male longear X female orange spot or female longear X male orange spot?

That's what I need help deciding as of now. Since the pond is multi layered I was thinking maybe doing one layer male Longears and female O-spots and doing the other pond female Longears and male O-spots and watching to see which offspring I favor.

Good luck on your project. I look forward to learning from your adventure.

Robby - thanks for the search info. Kind of humbling wading through all of that information. That was a huge question to try to give a simple answer to.

Their is one case where hybridization in the wild can be harmful. If an species is introduced into a waterway where a another species with a very limited range and population exists. If that species also preys on the native species.... well it can get bad. Just ask the Sunapee Trout.

I don't think Orangespots and Northern Longears will naturally reproduce...just guessing though. DNR electroshock logs that I've seen claim N Longear/Orangespot hybrids though fwiw.
