Hey- I am Tyler and I am from North Alabama. I have a 30 Gallon tank which currently is empty! BUT I will be setting it up in a few days to get some natives in there. Have raised MANY largemouth bass as well as many sunfish in this tank before! Nice to be with you guys...I never knew anything like this existed.

You're just in time, fishes in the Tennessee Valley are starting to color up, especially the darters. Where are you thinking of collecting? I was lucky last weekend and got out to the upper Paint Rock valley. But there are other accessible streams too, like many parts of Limestone Creek in Madison and Limestone counties, Mountain Fork of the Flint River in Madison county and Cypress Creek in Lauderdale County.

Well I have a creek in front of my house that is LADEN with Warmouths, so I generally collect about 10 of them and let them cycle my tank out once it gets rolling. There is a pond I fish at school (I am in college in Western Tennessee) that is stocked with Redbreasted sunfish. So I will probably get a couple of them. Does anyone know anything about Elodea? Is it a good cover plant? There is a LOT of it in our science center at school, and I was thinking about transferring some to my tank. I want some planted cover...let me know what you think. I just want some real plants in my tank, lol. And where would I get darters? I don't think I have ever seen one before.

Elodea is one of the best aquarium plants by almost any measure. It likes lots of light, and reasonably warm temperatures. If you're in west Tenn. it'd be hard to miss darters in various creeks. They can be found in no more than knee-deep flowing waters, variously in riffles or pools. A one-man seine will work on them, or use of a pushnet/dipnet. Once you find darters you'll realize, "Oh is THAT where they are!"

As far as structure-would it be a good idea to build a big rock structure in the middle of my tank? I have done this before and it looked really good. I think that would be neat, and especially if I rooted elodea all around it. How about substrate? Would just rocks be good? And another thing-I move home in May for the summer, would it be ok to just pack up the tank with all things in it and make the 3 hour drive home and just plug it back up? Just needing some basic info. Thanks alot guys.
