Oh, you're in Florida! My favorite fish (Elassoma gilberti) come from there. You're so lucky.

Welcome to the forum... take a look around... there is a lot of information here... feel free to ask some questions... hope we can help you pursue your hobby with natives.

I currently keep some darters from Florida (Etheostoma edwini the poorly named brown darter) and a hogchoker... cool fish.

thanks, what do you feed your hogchoker, do you ever see him eat? why and how does he stick to the side of my aquarium, he sure is a strange little guy.

I feed the tank frozen brine and mysis shrimp mostly. I have seen him move over to where the food was laying on the bottom and move sort of like a strike... but to be honest, never really saw his mouth open. But he's been in the tank for two years, so he must be eating it.

When the stocking density was really low with only other hogchokers and a sunfish in the tank, I rarely saw them stick to the side of the glass... however... I recently added some shiners to the tank that are rather bottom feeders... and now I often see him on the glass... maybe coincidence, but I think he is getting disturbed more, so is picking a place he will not be disturbed. The other fish are nosing around the sand, but they ignore him when he is on the glass.

I had the same experience with sticking to the glass when sharing the tank with darters, but not so much with shiners.

Hogchokers will eat most any frozen or live food that ends up on the bottom. It's hard to see their mouths open because they open sideways. I got four little ones about two years ago, and have one left. He's still under 3 inches.

Hi, Don. I'm glad you decided to come on over to see what NANFA is all about. You may recognize me from another forum trying to answer your flagfish and golden topmminnow questions. Glad you decided to come over and get info from the many much more experienced folks of NANFA. Welcome!

hi, how are you up there, i see you are quite involved with flagfish. Mine is beautiful and quite large, i hope to find a large female for him , i suspect he killed a juvenile i introduced 2 weeks ago, my topminnows are still doing well, and adding a lot of flash and motion to the aquarium, i hope to find another female topminnow, also i need to find a male for my 4 little dwarf livebearers, i think i will give them their own little aquarium, so far they haven't been bothered, but why chance it, i am getting a 55gal. tank this week as soon as i can find time to set it up. i am also beginning to plan an outside pond for excess fish and a couple of turtles maybe, maybe i have caught a fish disease

Florida has great fish. The Suncoast Killifish Club publishes a Florida Collecting Guide, which will show you what's where. Much of the proceeds go to NANFA. Welcome to the group, and to fishkeeping.
