Hey everyone, just found your sight, its nice to see others as enthused as me!
I live in Syracuse NY, and this spring I wanted to try collecting a grass pickerel or Redfin if I can find them within the distance of a weekend camping adventure. I know I can find the grass pickerel pretty easily, I was wondering though if anyone knew where the Redfin has been documented in New York State, specifically. I read that they are not too common in the state, although they are in the fishing regs so they are somewhere. Any info would be awsome, thanks.
Redfin in New York?

Though I have never collected them according to my book "The Inland Fishes of New York State" by C. Lavett Smith "the redfin is confined to Long Island and the eastern part of the state including Otsego Lake in the Sesquehanna drainage, the Delaware system, Champlain, and Hudson drainages."
I also know that the state record redfin (2 lbs, 1 oz.) was caught in Lake Champlain in Essex Co.

If their distribution is anything like it is in PA, it will be near impossible to find them in the Susquehanna river system. I've heard quite a few reports though of them being common in the Deleware river system, but that's just here in PA, I don't know out of state.

I guess the real key is to be able to distinguish the young of the different species when collecting. Hopefully I can find out where in Lake Champlain the record redfin was caught. Also found reference to a few ponds in Massachusetts. Does any one have a good reference they would recommend for keying out young? Any good on-line references or field guides, etc.? Looks like I have a new goal this summer...
I caught a 25in chain pickerel ice fishing on saturday. First time I ever ice fished, was a blast. Let em all go, small unproductive lake so I didn't want to take the breeders out.
Thanks for your folks' input.

I've found Redfins to be very common in the Basher kill in Haven NY. I think Chains could be found there as well though I don't recall ever finding one there. I'm in Schenectady, not too far from Syracuse the Basher Kill is about two hrs south from me. Be happy to go with you sometime.

Hey Trout Perch, you are not far from me over there in Chittenango. Thanks for the link. I've been to that site before back in school, but forgot all about it.
Mike I will take you up on your offer to go to Bahser Kill when the weather warms up and after the fish spawn. Thanks for the tip!!
