I found these photos of some aquatic plants today, and besides desperately wishing it was summer so I could snorkel there again, I wondered what species the first is. Sagittaria, maybe? It has leaves that float on the surface later in the year, which I believe have an arrow shape, so that's my guess.

The second picture is of a really pretty shallow water Chara species. I would love to be able to have an aquarium full of this, but I haven't had any luck with it yet.

The last is just a picture of the amazing Chara beds where I go snorkeling. Sigh.

Nice shots! You are right- the first plant is a Sagittaria. The septate roots are a giveaway. Of Minnesota species, only S. brevirostra, S. calycina, S. cuneata, S. latifolia, and occasionally S. rigida have the classic "arrowhead" leaves. If you can find a stalk with fruit on it you can probably ID it from that.

I'll try to remember that. Thanks. It's a really nice plant.

That 2nd plant is either Chara (if it smelled like bad garlic) or Nitella (if it didn't smell)

Those are really nice looking specimens! I might suspect S.cristata for the first one. I'm not as familiar with that species, though.

Thanks! I looked up S. cristata and it does look a lot like my plant, especially from above.

Indeed it is, in very large quantities. Along with some amazing bluegill.
