Invertebrate Forum?

We'd kicked the idea of an Invert place around on the listserv a couple times, and I think the Forum would be a great place to implement this. There's a pack of us who've really taken to the Unionid mussels, I know I keep a lot of different species of crayfish, and etc. Each time we've post natural history notes on the listserv, people seemed pretty excited to read about it and learn, as especially with mussels... It's not all that intuitive (think a photo ID of a cyprinid is hard? Ha!).

May draw in a completely different crowd as well. So far, on the web, the only places for people to talk about mussels is on a research forum, which is a great format, but I can see that as prohibitive to both amateurs and researchers alike for engaging discussions. There seem to be a lot of people interested in mussel conservation, but are intimidated to ask questions in a format like that, as we all know, some of those with advanced letters take themselves a little too seriously

I'd be glad to moderate. I'm sure Matt Ashton would as well. Ever get Jeffro out of the field, he would definately be a particpant, as would Jeremy Tiemann.

Especially since many native inverts are so intertwined with native fishes (e.g. mussel host specificity)!

I like, support, would participate, and help moderate if necessary. =D>

Can you fellas explain how you would want the forum divided (simple outline)?

I don't think it would need subforums. That would make it appear like not much goes on, or too specific, just one invert forum would be fine with me. Maybe just the forum link above plants and non-natives.

I was thinking of something simple like making a new forum in the Discussion or Groups categories. I don't know that it's worth much effort beyond what has been done for Plants. I really think it will serve the topic well enough to just have an Invertebrates forum.

But on the other hand, if we're trying to create a niche... We might want to separate into Mollusks and Arthropods. But then you'd have ID, hubandry, hosts, etc.

Actually, this could really get out of control.

Let me think about it. I'm going to look at an old issue of Ellipsaria and on the web and frame this as "I am a high school teacher doing macroinvertebrate studies..." and see what would be important to them.

Do you think that is a good target audience? Obviously, there would be those with skills above and below, but this may make a great "median" audience to cater toward.

Any thoughts appreciated!

Yeah, I'm down with this. Informed mussel people are few and far between so a dedicated spot on this board would be a huge step forward.

I'll just throw in my two cents and say I think an invert section would be a great addition. I think it should only be done as one, and not seperated in sub categories unless by some chance it becomes very popular and has a wide range of subjects.

Well, we've got individual sections for evey kind of fish... seems like we should have a section for different kinds of inverts... maybe just three basic sections...

Mollusks
Arthropods
Insects... including larva and life stages, etc.

Ok... It is created.

I made a new group and bunched the stragglers into that group.

For now, just one forum. If it does get busy, we can split it up at a later time.

At some point, someone will move the invert posts into the proper place.
