I used to be in Boston. Ten Mile is an interesting system, I found spotfin killifish, Fundulus luciae, in the mud of salt marshes on both the RI and MA sides of the river, which is to my knowledge about the northernmost population of the species. Rick Rego lives near you in Seekonk (I think) but I don't think he's on this board.

Just starting a native tank, gonna get 4 small bluegills for a 10 gal tank. I am in East providence, RI, a stone throw from you. Would love ideas for my new tank. My tropicals all perished over the last 2 years so now want to do something native. Will wind up with a 100 gal tank when i move back to the boston area.

Hi jmk, could we possibly talk you out of putting any bluegills in that 10 gallon tank? Even one bluegill in a 10 gallon tank will be very overcrowded. The 100 gallon tank, though, would make a fantastic bluegill display.

There are many other native fishes that will do fine in a 10 gallon tank, but I'm afraid that tank is just too small to keep any game fish in.

They are only an inch long at the moment, I have 4 of them. I have a 50 gal tank as well, which will be set up when i move back to boston. I plan on going all out with live native plants. I want to get some yellow perch, no idea where i'll find those.

What i eventually want to do is get a larger tank wider and deeper, maybe a little shallower, and create a real pond environment with a sandy bottom maybe some sticks and wood pieces. really go all out.

Come to the Fall Show at the Bristol County Agricultural School. The museum (Bristol County Natural History Center) will be open. We have over 800 gallons of display thanks with native fish and outer aquatic organisms. We used to hold NANFA New England Meetings at the museum. It was going strong for a little while but then sort of fizzled. We would be happy to host NANFA NE again, if someone is willing to take the lead in organizing the group. The museum can be used free of charge.

Brian, I'm going to try and come down and check out the show with my boys. If you want, let me know what species you still want [not counting bowfin or carp]. I can try and round some up before we come down. The boys will enjoy the show and get a kick out of donating some specimens to your displays.

What a great offer. Thank you!

I don't know what species live in your area, but I'd love to get a few of the following:
COMMON SHINER Luxilus cornutus
BLACKNOSE DACE Rhinichthys atratulus
LONGNOSE DACE Rhinichthys cataractae
SLIMY SCULPIN Cottus cognatus
ROCK BASS Ambloplites rupestris
REDBREAST SUNFIS Lepomis auritus

Museum visits can be scheduled starting in November. We have lots of school groups (elementary - college level), scout groups, home school groups, etc., etc.

It is also available for meetings if anyone would like to take the lead again on NANFA New England. The museum is right on the Taunton River. There are lots of esturine species about 1,000 feet from our back door. Rick Rego and I ahve been doing lots of marine siening lately. We've gotten some great tropicals lately: white mullet, inshore lizardfish, butterfly fish, scrawled cowfish, and coronette fish. We've got the lizardfish in our marine tank in the museum. It is awesome when it feeds on little mummiechogs!

Didn't you keep the butterfly or the cowfish?
I've made several posts here about my spotfin butterflies and bicolored damsals. Later I'll round up links to those posts rather than repost it.
I LOVE collecting tropicals! I've been so frustrated this season as I can't get down and time is running out. I hear it's been a good season with lots of odd balls showing up.
