seems like a fairly simple project, not a whole lot needed, but then again you could make it complicated and look for specifically the biological pathways and proteins responsible for their ability to do this (not my field of interest or expertise). By simple I mean just properly documenting the ability to do this. That would work for an undergrad senior research project.

Is that supposed to be some kind of hint Brian?

no I wasn't suggesting that you do it but I do think it would be a fairly simple and straight forward lab setup if done properly.

Yeah, I know I was just joshin', but still...I would like to do that sometime (But I'm afraid I'm much too partial to mudminnows to put them in harm)...ha.

I live in Dexter NY. They got the 12 feet about 30 minutes south of here. We only got about 6 feet. I cleared snow for 10 days straight.

Well, you're always welcome, Martin. Thanks for driving up to meet me in Grenada. I enjoyed what little daylight we had after my work hours, and dipping in the dark was certainly interesting. I didn't get an awful lot in what little time we had: a couple speckled darters, a gulf darter, and some blackspotted topminnows. They all made it home on my flight from Memphis okay, but for some reason the speckled darters didn't make it through the next night. Too much stress, I guess. Major bummer, but it happens. The gulf darter and topminnows are fine.

By the way, the catfish was really tasty!

Ed,
Just out of curiosity, How did you bring the fish with you. With the restrictions in place now, I thought carry-on might be dicey.

Not carry-on, in my checked luggage. Since you can only carry three ounces of liquid or less in your carry-on luggage, that option is out. I put them in Kordon breather bags, wrapped them in shirts, and packed them in my checked luggage. Normally you use newspaper to wrap Kordon breather bags, but the shirts breathe better and they were taking up space in my luggage anyway. It worked well.

I might employ this technique for the Texas convention next year. If I go, it will probably be a two-day drive each way. Maybe I'll just fly to Dallas and rent a car. Any fish I collect can come home on my flight. Those flying in to Greensboro this year might want to do the same thing. You can share buckets and equipment with people who drive down (like me) until it's time to head to the airport.

You might want to think about being prepared to mail fish home from convention collecting, especially for smaller species. Even Priority Mail works well. Bring your mailing boxes and bags with you in advance. After getting the third-degree in the airport last Friday when I flew out of town I wouldn't try carrying fish; I guess the checked luggage route would work too, if the TSA people running the scanner equipment aren't feeling too juiced up.

Coming back from Tampa last year, I used Kordon bags in a soft sided cooler and brought them back as carry-on, but that was before the new restrictions on liquids. I have never tried as checked luggage.
