This was caught in Oct in Crooked River near Panacea and Tates Hell, FL. Was hoping it was notius at the time of capture but looks like a LMB now. Comments?

It has a really big eye. So I dunno.

This is a LMB.

It looks salmoides to me, but I've never had a notius in my hands. I can only go by pictures I've seen of them, and adult ones at that. It does have a rather large eye, so I'm guessing this is a YOY fish? I may very well be missing something, but markings and jaw hinge placement look to me like LMB. Nice looking little fellow.

Steve.

Jaw is not extended past the rear of that gigantic eye, and that spinous dorsal and the soft dorsal are not separated. This makes me think it is not LMB. How big was this fish?

At first I thought I could see that too, but then I noticed some change in texture and a curve just beneath where the bottom cheek line gets light. I'm not looking at this on a very high quality system right now though, so it's likely that you've got the right call.

Steve.

It appears we posted at the exact same time earlier.
I was curious about the size of this fish simply because I didn't know if what I mentioned above holds true for YOY or juveniles as compared to adults. I'll be interested to here what the more experienced folks have to say for sure.

Click on the picture to get it very large then scroll to see mouth and eye more clearly.

It is salmoides no doubt in my mind. Those largemouth out of that black water really can throw you off. I have thought I have caught notius briefly a couple of times but so far that is the only bass I have failed to capture that I have made an attempt for. Young salmoides do not show the adult characters of the separated dorsal and the mouth going well behind the eye. If it were notius the markings on the body would be different and it would display the tricolor tail like every micropterus except salmoides. Sorry to disapoint you Fritz, better luck next time. Actually if your in the area of notius let me know and maybe I'll make an effort to join you, maybe the 4th attempt will be the charm...

I was told that larte eye size can be related to the lack of growth rate of the fish too. I.e., the eyes grow at a standard rate regardless if the fish is stunted or lacking a good food supply. Therefore slow growing or stunted fish tend to have large eyes compared to their body size.

Of course I'm aware that some species tend to have large eyes e.g. crappies and rock bass etc.

Looks like a largemouth. I've only caught a few YOY M. notius, and remember them having vertically elongate bars similar to a YOY shoalie or a smallmouth. Once they get a bit bigger there's no mistaking them. Sorry, Fritz!
