So, I'm no expert when it comes to North American fish not native to my area, so I need some help with this fish.

Yesterday I went to the LFS store looking for something to add to my tropical tank, and I passed by the rosey reds, and in there were some killifish. I asked the kid workin there if I could get some, and he said "yeah, I don't see why not". He's like "so the big guppies that got mixed in the tanks?" and I said "No, they're actually...no wait, yeah, the guppies." I didn't want them to jack up prices for me. I haven't got a picture of them yet, possibly this weekend, but their description is pretty easy. They're just plain brown with a black teardrop around their eyes. No other colors that I have seen yet.

Somehow I actually did get one guppy too, but 7 for a dollar, I won't complain.

When I try to explain which fish I want at the pet store, I call them "the weed fish that came in with the feeders".

the black tear drop and plain coloration otherwise sounds like mosquito fish which are often in feeder tanks but are a livebearer not a killifish. Who knows though without a picture to look at.

Yeah, you're right. I checked for pictures online of the western mosquito fish, and it's what I have. I have actually never seen a mosquito fish in person, and they were on top and have a sort of flat back, so i just assumed.

That's alrite though, I was actually going to ask someone if they would send me some once the weather broke, so I guess that saves me some shipping.

Be careful what you put them with they are fin biters of other small fish and although a livebearer out of the 3 species I keep a stock of they are the one that always eat their young if I don't remove them from the tank the parrents are in. The other two I have are Heterandria formosa and sailfin mollies (wild florida stock) and I never bother taking the youg out with either of those they just don't seem to eat them much if at all.

Right now they're in a tank by themselves and a crayfish. I had always planned on finding them someday, even when I was really big into tropicals. I thought they would go along nicely with tiger barbs and such, being fin nippers and all. I think now I'm just going to keep them in a species tank.

that would be the best I've seen them kick the tar out of a convict and considering it was supposed to be food....
