I have for E. zonale. 3 of them have some red dotting in the dorsal fin. The smallest doesnt. Not sure if its immature or female. My largest has the most green banding. The other have some but more mottling. Here are a few quick videos.

I doubt I'd be real good at telling the difference in females and juveniles, but the DNR website here in Ohio has some pictures of a male and female banded darter. http://www.dnr.state...53/Default.aspx

Pictures are kind of small, but they are fairly clear.

Hope this helps some.
I enjoyed the videos. Thanks for posting them.

Steve.

Yep. That's the one. I just tried the link I added and it didn't work for me either this time. Not sure what happened, I tried it through "preview post" before I hit the "add reply" button and it worked just fine.

The Ohio DNR website has some good pictures, some of them are even from NANFA members.

I'll try another link: http://www.michigan....8958---,00.html

If you click on the first link available, called "ID your fish" it should take you to a page that will let you select what fish you want. Many of the selection have pictures of juvenile fish. It worked last time I tried it from home. Right now, it wants me to download something, but I'm not on my home computor so I can't do anything. Hope this works.

I now know I have 3 males & a female. A medium sized zonale colored up & chased another one 3/4 across my 55. Only to be stopped by my largest one who I always knew was a male. the smallest one, which I think is the female, the big guy was keeping close by. Until today, I havent noticed any conspecific aggression before.

Steve, I find it interesting in the link you provided that Michigan has "hijacked" the Fishes of Wisconsin Identification Database. I assume that there's a lot of overlap, but I'm sure that there are a lot of fishes in Wisconsin that you won't find in Michigan and vice-versa. Interesting...
