Current Paddlefish Research?

I recently read "The Paddlefish - Status, Management, and Propagation" which is the proceedings of a paddlefish symposium held as part of the 45th Midwest Fish and Wildlife Conference, St Louis, 1983.

10 papers were included on topics such as life history and biology, distribution and habitat threats, propagation and aquaculture opportunities. etc., as well as an indexed bibliography with over 550 references.

I found it interesting and useful but it's almost 30 years old and I'm sure that new information has been gleaned in the intervening years. I'm wondering if anyone knows of more current published research on paddlefish? Anyone know of a more recent bibliography?

Thanks!

Gordon

Yes, there's American Fisheries Symposium 66, "Paddlefish Management, Propagation, and Conservation in the 21st Century", edited by Craig P. Paukert and George D. Scholten, which came out in 2009.

Thanks Bruce. Looks like exactly what I was looking for. Here's a review and list of contents I found: http://www.afsbooks.org/54066P

Does anyone here work for the Missouri Dept. of Conservation?

Thanks.

This is a long shot i know, but does anyone have, or know where to get, a used copy of this book for sale?

Also, does anyone know Dr Craig Paukert. MO Cooperative Fish and Wildlife? If so please PM me.

Thanks

Gordon,
Osage Catfisheries (http://osagecatfishe...m/show-fish.asp) is probably a very good source for paddlefish propagation and information. They do have paddlefish for sale.

Another source would be Chuck Hicks at Lincoln University. He is an aquaculture extension specialist at L.U. and a professor in the Aquaculture degree program. He has in the past also worked at M.D.C. and other state conservation departments. He may have knowledge of where this book might be available. His email is hicksc@lincolnu.edu.

Another possibility is Dr. Jim Wetzel, also at L.U. He specializes in sunfish species, but might be able to point you in the right direciton for information or books. He is also part of NCRAC. His email is wetzelj@lincolnu.edu

Additional sources might be found through the Missouri Aquaculture Association (http://moaquaculture.org/).

Hope this helps!

Mike

Mike,

Many thanks for the resources. I'll follow up with them. I actually have been in touch with Osage Hatchery and, while they were understandably hesitant to deal with small growers like myself, I'm hopeful they will agree to part with a few fingerlings this spring/summer.

From what I've been reading, Missouri, and specifically the Osage River, has been the epicenter for paddlefish research. The Osage isn't too far from me and I would like to contact Missouri folks with paddlefish experience.

Thanks again.
