I'd believe it. I saw this video of wild swordtails with males with a bright orange stripe:
They seem to survive pretty well in the wild even with that orange on them.
There's some sort of darter in the video at 0:14

The P. latipinna pictured in Fritz's Freshwater Fishes of SC book has a bright yellow-orange face. The photo is by Noel Burkhead of FL so I'm guessing its probably a FL specimen. The few mollies I've seen in the Carolinas dont have much face color.
