I was debating sampling last week but the cold wind made me decide to go fishing instead (i don't have to go far from my car for that so can leave when I want to).

I caught a perch that appears to be suffering from a bad case of Ich. Which is odd as I heard Ich is usually an aquarium disease that hits in stressed captive conditions and is rare in the wild.

Is this rare or unusual?

The pumpkinseeds had surprisingly bright yellow bellies. (debated posting a pic but this isn't a fishing forum).

That's a bit too big looking to be ich to me, more likely some type of parasite like a nematode or trematode perhaps (hard to say from the pic). Ich should look more like salt sprinkled over the fish.

Ich is quite common in the wild. In most places I've lived any fish brought home during summer would have ich.

Cheers
Peter

i was thinking it was a bit to big to be ich as well, but had no idea what it would be otherwise.

Maybe fish-lice (Argulus & friends) ??
I have never SEEN ich visible on a wild fish, but obviously they have it because it can show up within a copule days in an aquarium, placed in water that no other fish have been living in. I suspect it rarely kills wild fish, since they dont get exposed to the high density that captive fish do.

I've seen it on a wild fish (Enneacanthus gloriosus) from a SC river that was coastal enough to be tidal and fairly fast flowing. I haven't seen it in more slackwater habitats where it would be better able to concentrate.

Post the pumkinseeds pictures too. The fishing provides sampling opportunities to view.

I was amazed how yellow their bellies are so early in the year. No blue opercular lines on them yet.
