Hey all,

I find this stuff growing all on drift wood that in the back swamps of a lake. Some of it below visible water lines and some above. Can it grow submerged in a fish tank? Thanks for any information.

I would say that what you have is a terrestrial species of moss that needs dampness but not long-term submersion. My guess is that it would grow for a while in an aquarium, and then rot as it gets oxygen deprived. Hopefully Nativeplanter and others concur.

Many plants that grow in swampy areas can tolerate submersion for periods of time, even up to a month or so. Sometimes a plant can grow underwater completely if it gets a lot of light. I would try the moss and see what happens (but not lots of it in your main tank, in case it rots). I've seen this species before, but haven't played with it. One of these days I'll try to learn my mosses better.... Looks a bit like a type of sphagnum, but without a central stem. Perhaps a relative?

It does look rather sphagnum-like.
